Teaching and Scholarly Interests: Bilingual Studies and Communication
Dr Cindy Lau was conferred her Doctor of Philosophy and BA in Linguistics with a minor in Japanese Language by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Before that, she graduated from PolyU HKCC with an Associate Degree in Bilingual Communication (honoured on the Dean’s List). Her research interests lie in Syntax and Semantics, Sociolinguistics, Bilingualism, Language Acquisition and Language Teaching, mainly on Cantonese, English and Mandarin Chinese.
Before joining this institution, Dr Lau had taught Linguistic and English related subjects at other local institutions for over ten years. Dr Lau is currently an associate member of the CPCE Centre for Pedagogic Research (CPCECPR). Besides, she is an active life member of The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong (LSHK) and an examiner of the Cantonese Read Aloud Test (CRAT) and Cantonese Oral Proficiency Examination (COPE). Recently, Dr Lau has extended her interest to the area of teaching Cantonese as an additional language. She has joined the Cantonese Alliance and Cantonese Language Teachers Association aiming at organising Cantonese courses and developing materials for Cantonese learning and teaching based on national standards.
During leisure time, Dr Lau is a yoga lover. She is now a qualified Yoga Instructor with various teaching qualifications recognised by the Yoga Alliance, including Hatha Yoga (RYT-200), Yoga Wheel, Chair Yoga and Pre/Post-natal Yoga.
