Teaching and Scholarly Interests: Information Technology
Dr Simon Wong has over 15 years' experience in information technology (IT) training and consulting. He first started his IT career as a consultant at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis/St Paul - Twin Cities, USA) where he pursued, simultaneously, his Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSci). After obtaining his BCompSci with distinction, Dr Wong joined a PC-FAX driver vendor as a software engineer. He was then awarded a Research Studentship for his Master of Philosophy (MPhil) study at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) focusing on research on self-healing asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network while holding IT tutorial and laboratory classes. After obtaining his MPhil in ATM network research, Dr Wong continued his teaching work at PolyU. He also organised networking courses with Cisco Networking Academy for PolyU staff and students. Then, Dr Wong worked as a senior consultant for Oracle, a worldwide leader in database management systems, specialising in pre-sales and post-sales support, bid and proposal management, project management in Oracle course development, consultancy and training of Oracle products for various sectors such as banking, telecommunications, manufacturing, government and tertiary education. With his technical expertise in Oracle database administration, application server, tools, and applications, he was able to provide practical and valuable business solutions to clients. In recognition for his contribution to Oracle's business growth, he was named Quarterly Outstanding Performance Staff by Oracle.
Since joining HKCC, Dr Wong has been teaching various IT subjects at HKCC. Meanwhile, he took the Doctor of Education (EdD) study at the University of Leicester (UK) and was awarded EdD in IT education research. Dr Wong was also involved in the leadership of the Associate in Information Technology programme. In addition, he has organised Summer Oracle Training on Java Programming for Android App Development for students and Cloud Practitioner Essentials training courses with Amazon Web Services Academy for academic staff. In addition to teaching and academic management, Dr Wong is interested in IT education research, specialising in investigation of factors influencing learning effectiveness of online education, students' and teachers' perceptions of student response systems, and learning effectiveness of multimedia learning. He was also awarded over HK$1 million research grants for performing IT and IT-related education research. Besides, Dr Wong participates actively in community services and scholarly activities. He is a consultant for Wanchai and Central & Western District Industries and Commerce Association, a committee member of International Conference on Internet Studies and a reviewer for Journal of Computer Assisted Learning and International Journal of Cyber Society and Education.
