Dr NG, Sun-pui Zerance
Associate Division Head
BEng (H.K.Poly.); PhD [PolyU(H.K.)]
Teaching and Scholarly Interests: Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering & Physics
Dr S.P. Ng received his BEng (Hons) and PhD degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in 1994 and 2001 respectively. During his postgraduate study period, Dr Ng served as research scholar in the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.
After graduation, Dr Ng took the post of research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of PolyU, specialising in stress and failure analyses of laminated textile composite materials. In 2005, Dr Ng joined the Institute of Textiles and Clothing of PolyU as a lecturer and taught in the intimate apparel specialism. He has been teaching various subjects at degree level, such as Intimate Apparel Production Technology, Intimate Pattern CAD and Advanced Molding Technology.
Through the years, Dr Ng has involved in the supervision of postgraduates and all his MPhil and PhD students had successfully completed their research studies.
In the realm of funded research, Dr Ng has taken part, either as principal or co-investigator, in various research projects which received funding totaled more than HK$10 million. The funding sources include the Competitive Earmarked Research Grant (CERG), General Research Fund (GRF), Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) from both the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) and the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) as well as PolyU departmental research funds. All these projects integrate mechanical engineering principles with textiles technologies and his expertise lies in new development of engineering materials and functional textiles. His latest endeavor is the ITF Tier 3 project titled “Novel 3D Textiles Design for Sound Absorption Applications”.
