Heidi’s career in social work spans 20 years.
Heidi obtained her Diploma in Social Work (distinction) from the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong (now called City University of Hong Kong). She then received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (Honours) from the City University of Hong Kong and Master of Arts in Gender Studies from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Heidi began her first social worker’s post in 1991. She is a registered social worker who worked in the front line in Harmony House for community education, advocacy and treatment for survivors (especially abused women and children) of domestic violence for almost nine years. Especially working for women, she applied women’s empowerment and networking when working with women in the community and female drug addicts during her tenure in the Hong Kong Federation of Women’s Centres and SARDA@Women’s Treatment Centre respectively. Moreover, she also worked with sexual minority when she worked as a social worker in Hong Kong AIDS Foundation and organised volunteer work and educational programmes in AIDS prevention. On the other hand, she has worked voluntarily for Hong Kong Sex Education Association (HKSEA) for over 20 years. She had been the Vice-chairperson of HKSEA for over 12 years before becoming the Treasurer two years ago. Such volunteer services truly reflect her strong interest in gender and sex education.
Apart from social work experience, she also has strong fundamental work in social work practicum education, rooted in working for practicum education and liaison team in the City University of Hong Kong for two years. She then moved to work in the Hong Kong College of Technology as a Lecturer and a Fieldwork Coordinator for five years. She is aware of the importance of the integrative experiences of the practicum that assists students with blending theory and practice.
Before joining this institution, Heidi was a Lecturer and a Fieldwork Coordinator in UOW College Hong Kong (formerly known as Community College of City University of Hong Kong) for almost two years for both FT and PT work, teaching subjects such as social work process and method; understand human growth and behavior; gender perspective in social work; group work; individual work and organization & service management.
Heidi is still looking for and encouraging creativity and experimentation in learning and teaching.
