Professor Roger C.K. Chan received his doctoral degree from Lincoln College, University of Oxford, after obtaining his Master and Bachelor degrees from London School of Economics and Political Science and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has over 30 years of research, teaching and administrative experience in urban planning, urbanism and governance. He joined the Division of Social Sciences, Humanities and Design of the College of Professional and Continuing Education in 2021.
Professor Chan’s field of research is regional and urban development with a primary interest in cross-border planning, mega cities and urban agglomeration, and (economic) free trade zones. He has published extensively, and has sat on the editorial board of refereed journals including The China Review, Sustainable Development, Asian Geographer, Planning and Development (HK), Dialogues in Human Geography and Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Urban Design and Planning.
Professor Chan has taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses on urban and regional planning at The University of Hong Kong, in addition to supervising research students and undergraduate dissertation projects. He pioneers the teaching of urban sustainability, using place-based approach, in common core courses for cross-discipline undergraduate students. He has been awarded Outstanding Research Students Supervisor Award and Doris Zimmern HKU-Cambridge Hughes Hall Fellowship. He is an Honorary Associate Professor of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, The University of Hong Kong, and an External Examiner for the MSc Urban and Regional Planning programme of the Glasgow-Nankai Joint Graduate School.
Professor Chan is an elected fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, UK. He has served on various local and overseas professional and public bodies, including the Town Planning Board, Urban Renewal Authority (Central & Western District Advisory Committee), Vice Chairman of Macao Urban Planning Institute; he has acted as an expert adviser on economic plans and development projects in China and abroad.
